Vol V Descendants of Thomas Thayer, Immigrant to America 1637 – Through His Grandsons Jonathan3 & Thomas3 (Ferdinando2, Thomas1) ERRATA: VOLUME V: Family #725 on page 76, Austin Calvin Thayer and wife Alma O’Brien are shown with a 6th son, Frederick Finley Thayer (#744), whose own family is continued on page 78. This error was not discovered until just recently. Please acknowledge the following correction: The true son of Austin Calvin Thayer and Alma O’Brien was Fred Henry Thayer, born 27 February 1898 in Kankakee County, Illinois. He married 19 Sep 1917 in Montgomery County, Indiana to Esther Maria Thompson. Esther was born 9 January 1899 in Indiana. It is not known when and where she died. Fred Henry Thayer died June 1970 in Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana. No known children were born to Fred and Esther. So what now becomes of Frederick Finley Thayer and family? They were actually already in my UNPLACED Thayer files. This “Fred” Thayer was, in fact, the son of Caleb Thayer (1839-1919) and Rebecca Eveline Miller (1855-1931) who settled in Linden, Montgomery, Indiana. Caleb Thayer was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In 1874, he and Rebecca were married in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They became the parents of eight children, one of whom was Frederick Finley Thayer (1897-1960). Frederick married Mildred Faye Kochell in 1921 and they had a family of four daughters and two sons, all of whom were born and raised in Indiana. Now I do know that Caleb Thayer was the son of Joseph Thayer and Margaret Stoops, of whom almost nothing is known, other than the fact they had four children: i. Joseph A. (1837); ii. Henry (abt 1838); iii. Caleb (1839-1919); and iv. Nathan (abt 1843). (NOTE: Only their son, Caleb, was known to have married and had issue! His sons Joseph and Nathan died young. Now, here is the spoiler alert: My readers will have to wait until Volume XI of my Comprehensive Genealogy of the Thayer Family of America is published before I can commence Volume XII, which will contain the Thayer families for which there is no known connection to one of the three Colonial immigrating Thayer brothers (Thomas, Richard and William) from Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England! After 50 years of researching and compiling, evaluating and publishing my Thayer Genealogy Publishing Project, I hope I will live long enough to also complete VolumeXII. Thanks for your patience! See: History of Montgomery County, Indiana : with personal sketches of representative citizens. Page 132, #1277 and #1279: Charles L. Thayer (#1277) is shown as a son of Franklin Pierce Thayer (Family # 1277). Correction: CharlesLester THAYER (19 Jul 1874 -16 Jun 1952) is, in fact, a son of Austin Palmer THAYER and Catherine Julia GUIDER (1 Jan 1848-26 Dec 1917). This family will appear in Volume VII of the “Comprehensive” series. (Thanks to Henry Jerome Thayer for finding this error.) Page 176, #1729, Frank E. Thayer. Correction: Frank Edward THAYER was born on 10 Feb 1854 in Keesville,Essex,NY. He died on 4 Feb 1921 in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA. He was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Cemetery, Whittier, Los Angeles, CA. He married (1) Mildred BRITTON on 14 Oct 1880 in Deadwood, Lawrence, SD. Mildred was born on 1 Mar 1861 (of) Van Buren, Crawford, AR, the daughter of William A. BRITTON (1833-1882) and Mildred TENNYSON (1835-1973) of Van Buren, Crawford, Arkansas. Mildred died on 11 Oct 1896 in Portland, Multnomah, OR. They were the parents of: i. Helen Thayer who was born 14 Dec 1891 in Portland, Multnomah, OR and died 22 Jan 1948 in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA. Helen married Robin Bryans DAUGHTRY on 5 Jun 1917 in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA. Robin was born on 20 Apr 1890 in Indian Springs, Butts, GA. He died on 1 Nov 1960 in Wellborn, Suwannee, FL. Frank married (2) Mary DURHAM daughter of George Hannibal DURHAM and Satera Emeline CLARK about 1900. Mary was born on 20 May 1870 in Oregon. She died on 19 Jan 1963 in Los Angeles County, CA and was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Cemetery,Whittier, Los Angeles, CA. Frank and Mary had the following children: ii. Marion THAYER, born in 1901 in Mexico. Marion married Leo Nelson MORRIS . Leo was born on 4 Apr 1899 in CA. He died on 26 Apr 1978 in Los Angeles County,CA. He was the son of John L. MORRIS (1872-) and Irene Jane COOK (1876-1959). iii. Frances THAYER was born about 1904 in Mexico. And iii. Marjorie THAYER was born about 1909Los Angeles County,CA. She probably never married and was an advertising writer. (My thanks to Donna Waters- Thayer for pointing out this error.) Page 270, for #2580 : Alonzo Peter THAYER. This should read instead: Lorenzo Peter THAYER. He was a Methodist minister and moved around quite a bit. Both Lorenzo and wife, Laura Alvina THAYER likely died in Johnson County, TX, though I have not found a death or burial record for either. It was his son, Franklin Thayer (# 2585) was born 6 March 1852 (probably in Quincy, Adams, IL) and died 20 Oct 1927 in Jacksonville, Morgan, who is buried in the Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville, Morgan, IL. The date of birth given for Franklin Thayer in the Illinois death Index is incorrect, as proven by his age in the 1856 Gilmer, Adams, IL census; the 1860 Grandview, Johnson, TX census; and the known information on the births of his siblings. -Page 294, Families #2786 and #2789: Raymond Harold THAYER (born 21 Oct 1895 in Chicago, Cook, IL and died 8 Sep 1971 in Albuquerque, Family # 4777: William Henry Thayer, born 1 Oct 1895 in Brooklyn, Kings, NY was NOT the son of George P. THAYER and Elsie Mae AMILTON. He married about 1921 to Thyra Elizabeth GRUBB (23 Jul 1899 – Apr 1950) and they were the parents of the two sons shown on page 519. William Henry THAYER died 25 Jul 1961 in Cresson, Cambria, PA; both he and wife Thyra are buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Altoona, Blair, PA. The father of William Henry THAYER, according to his death certificate, was a Joseph Thayer who was born in NY, and died before 1900. His mother was Johanna M. (“Annie”) SCHEIT (1866- aft 1940) who was an immigrant from Germany. |
