The Thayer Y-DNA project needs your help identifying male descendants with a documented genealogic paper trail and then encouraging them to have their Y-DNA tested. An ongoing effort is to find living male descendants from lines where no Y-DNA testing has been done. This is important if we are ever going to be able to help identify Thayers who lack paper genealogic trails using Y-DNA test results. When we have credible results for all lines that produced male heirs, we may be able to identify unknown Thayers.
Currently, the Thayer Y-DNA Project has test results from descendants of Thomas, Richard, and William, but many lines are not tested. For instance, Thomas (1) Thayer's son Ferdinando (2) had seven sons who produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results from five lines of the seven: Jonathan (3) (1658-1690), Thomas (3) (1664-1738), Josiah (3) (1669-1728), Isaac (3) (ca 1672-1754), and Ebenezer (3) (1674-1723). Thomas Thayer’s son Thomas (2) had two sons who produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results from one line, John (3) (1556-1746). Thomas’s son Shadrack (2) had three sons, of which two produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results from one line, Ephraim (3) (1670-1757).
Richard (1) Thayer’s has two sons, Richard (2) and Nathaniel (2). Richard (2) had two sons who produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results from both lines, Richard (3) and Nathaniel (3). Richard’s (1) son Nathaniel (2) had one son who produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results from this line, Cornelius (3).
William (1) Thayer’s son Nathaniel (2) had four sons who produced male heirs. We have Y-DNA results on one line, Jonathan (3) (1685-1778).
We need your help to find people willing to be Y-DNA tested in the following lines:
1. Thomas, Thomas, Ebenezer, Ebenezer (1692).
2. Thomas, Ferdinando, Samuel, Benjamin, Samuel, William Turpin, William Turpin. Line may be in Chile.
3. Thomas, Ferdinando, Benjamin, Aaron (1715).
4. Thomas, Shadrack, Samuel, Timothy (1701).
5. Thomas, Shadrack, William, Jonathan (1703).
6. William, Nathaniel, Nathaniel (1668).
7. William, Nathaniel, William (1680).
8. William, Nathaniel, Isaac (1688).
9. William, Benjamin, John (1675)
If you would like to join the Thayer Y-DNA Project, go to the Thayer Family DNA project website: www.familytreedna.com/public/thayer
and click on the Join
link at the top right of the page and fill in the requested information. I will respond to your request and you will be sent a link with information on how to purchase a test kit. Links at the top left of the website provide information and will answer many of your questions. The Y-DNA111 test is recommended for people joining the Thayer DNA Project as it provides the largest test data. The cost for the Big Y-700 test is $449, Y-111 test is $249, and the Y-37 test is $119.
Y-DNA tests the paternal line only. Y-DNA mutates very slowly, so your Y chromosome looks nearly identical to your father's Y-DNA. Your Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) can trace your father, his father, his father’s father, and so forth. It offers a clear path from you to a known, or likely, direct paternal ancestor.
