Philip S. Thayer, 69
Memorial services will be held today for Philip S. Thayer, 69, a bio-chemist, who died Tuesday at University Hospital while undergoing surgery to correct an aneurysm of the aorta. Mr. Thayer, of Hull, was a retired vice president of Arthur D. Little in the life sciences division. For the past six years he was active in the Life Saving Museum in Hull. He also wrote occasional newspaper columns and worked part-time at World's End in Hingham. He was a past resident of Arlington, where he was active in the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church, a Town Meeting member and the first chair of the newly formed Conservation Committee.
He attended Amherst College, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He earned a PhD in 1952 from California Institute of Technology. His undergraduate education was interrupted by his World War II service as a weatherman in the Army Air Corps. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley, he taught chemistry at the Los Angeles campus of the school.
He leaves his ex-wife, Virginia B. of Arlington; a son, Philip S. Jr. of Hull; two daughters, Margaret K. of Brookfield, Ill., and Elizabeth J. of Dallas; a sister, Esther V. Henrick- son of Lexington, Ky.; a brother, Robert E. of Barnstable; and a granddaughter. Memorial services will be at the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church in Arlington at 1 p.m. today.
